FARMERS AND MERCHANTS BANK OF ASHLAND

Ashland, NE | May 2022

This family-owned bank located in a historic downtown district has been in operation for 140 years. While the façade has retained its original character, the interior has undergone several renovations, lastly in 1981. This renovation left the bank on the lower level with apartments above and adjacent to available tenant space. The interior of the bank was dark and cramped with four teller stations and offices at the perimeter.

With the intent to modernize and open the bank to natural light, while maintaining the historic nature of the exterior, the apartments were demolished, and the bank expanded. A newly created opening in the floor provides a connection between levels. Openings cut in the wall between the bank and the partially demolished adjacent building, allow for a new elevator and stair. Careful detailing at the stair channels natural light to the lower level.

Inviting, natural bamboo panels are repeated at major viewpoints, including the elevator façade and historic vaulted ceiling. A bamboo wainscot with concealed cove light wraps the back wall, creating a unifying element. Glass office fronts allow natural light from exterior fenestrations to penetrate the lobby giving the space a light, airy feel.
